rue-madame's Diaryland Diary

Off with my head

Sorry about the dearth of entries, but some friends arrived Wednesday afternoon, and we set off for a quickie 2-day trip to the Loire Valley to see some chateaux. I dont know if you know this, but there are a ton of them, all sprinkled around the edges of the Loire and other rivers, and we managed to see 4. That to me is an accomplishment, when you consider that we hit the biggies: Azay-le-Rideau, Chenonceau, Villandry and Chambord. We stayed in this really nice little hotel, and except for returning the rental car in rush-hour traffic in Paris, it was really fun. We even made a detour to the Loires Nuclear Power Plant and went to the visitor center. Everyone wanted to stock up on glow-in-the-dark swag at the gift shop but of course the French are not great merchandisers so the most we could make off with were little blue scrub hats. I had no idea that 75% of Frances power is nuclear. That, to me, is frightening.

Today it was pissing down rain, and they all slept in. Since it was shitty out AND the biggest national holiday in France, there was not much to do but eat (at Chartier, my favorite turn-of-the-century soup kitchen with gruff waiters who write your order on the table) and wander around. I showed them some of the galeries (covered little streets which now house shops (like Gaultier) and restaurants) then we walked over the the Louvre and the little foire at the Tuileries. We went on a fabulous barf ride, and laughed at people on the bumper cars and in the fun houses. I was in tears from laughing so hard.

They all took off in search of a dinner crepe and I am languishing at home, indisposed with the monthlies. The firemen next door are having their annual Bastille Day ball, and the music is so fricken loud. Right now, its old F rench stuff as well as covers done in French (example: I just heard Spooky. Dusty Springfield has nothing to worry about.) It wont be until later that they break into technotronica, and then all we will hear is either Daft Punk or Air. Oh god, now its the Macarena.
