rue-madame's Diaryland Diary

The Big O

This athlete is totally my hero.

I watched his race last night, and was so excited for him. I especially loved that when he finished his races (both the qualifying and the final ones) he had the most amazing, happy, ecstatic smile on his face. I've always hated it when athletes complete their events and end with an expression closer to "I'm gonna git you sucka!" than "Wow! I can't believe I just did that!"

And then to find out that Cheek had an ideal propelling him forward! He turned his meeting with the press into an occasion to talk about hunger in Tchad and the devastation in Darfur! How can you not say to yourself, “This is the spirit of the Olympics”?

I love the Flying Tomato, and I even love those German pairs skaters who use too much self-tanner. They are great, but you have to wonder what they’re going to do with their notoriety…

Still, participating in the Olympics? Anyway you slice it, it is an amazing testament to perseverance, endurance, stamina and will.

They get my vote.
